THE CHROMATIC TUNER
A chromatic tuner can be used to tune your guitar, bass, banjo, violin, or any musical instrument. A chromatic tuner is electronic, but it also serves more then one function.
Many of today’s chromatic tuners can offer multiple options. Besides tuning a wide variety of instruments, they may also contain a metronome; and they usually have built in tones – even to the extent of the full range of the piano. All of this can be packaged into a small box the size of a cigarette pack.
If you just want the tones, we recommend the PT-15 or 10006 Chromatic F Pocket Tones. This tool is even smaller then the electronic chromatic tuner, and complete with volume control and individual note select.
The PT-15 is the most sought after and versatile Pocket Tones yet.
It can be used for virtually any instrument, and has specialized uses as well.
A cappella singers, quartets and choral groups find the chromatic C indispensable, it is a must, especially when there is no piano or other reference instrument near by. The Pocket Tones chromatic tone generator is ideal for personal practice, note identification, and development of relative or perfect pitch. It is a great tool for ear training.
If you own the chromatic Pocket Tones, a pitch pipe or another type of chromatic tone generating device, here are some practical hints for its use:
- Practice pitch matching – play the tone and then sing the pitch.
- Sing a unison or harmony pitch with the Pocket Tones. See if your voice can remain constant, unwavering, like the tone you are matching.
- Practice developing relative/perfect pitch – attempt to sing the tone before pushing the button. The chromatic Pocket Tones can be useful to you anytime, anywhere. It’s on your keychain so when you find yourself with a spare minute anywhere, you can work on singing the pitch first and then checking yourself with the tones.
- Learn a melody line. If you don’t have access to a piano, you can pick out the pitches on the Pocket Tone to help you learn a melody from sheet music.
- Have a chance to sing somewhere but there’s no music? Make sure you get started on the right pitch!
- Practice and learn intervals. Develop your musical ear by learning to identify the sound of one note to another.
The Pocket Tones pitch pipe and a wide assortment of electronic tuners can be purchased at your local music store. Contact Farley’s for further information.
